About Lacquer Boxes of Olinala
Laca de Olinalá
These pieces are made with a traditional lacquer technique by natives of the state of Guerrero in Mexico. The artist begins by applying to a wooden box a very thin coat of a pasty mixture of different kinds of soils and linseed, called "chia" seed. This paste is applied by hand, until a bright and smooth surface is acquired. Afterward it is decorated using a very fine paint brush, dotted or engraved by knife using traditional designs with floral and fauna motifs.
Due to the nature of the paints used, these pieces do not always photograph true to color. In addition, your computer set-up may change how pictures are displayed on your monitor. All measurements are accurate to the best of my ability (I use my trusty wooden ruler), but may not be exact. If you would like to see more pictures of any piece, please contact us. We will be happy to e-mail more photos to you.
